This activity, designed for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, nurses, and dietitians, will explore the unique dynamics of the patient/home infusion clinician relationship, emphasizing the challenges that arise in maintaining professional boundaries. Home infusion therapy patients often require extended care, sometimes spanning months or even years, and clinicians frequently develop long-term relationships with the same patients. While this continuity of care can be beneficial, it also presents potential risks in terms of boundary issues that can compromise the professionalism of the relationship. Through this presentation, participants will learn what constitutes professional boundaries, how to recognize when these boundaries may be crossed, and effective strategies for addressing and resolving any boundary concerns. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of maintaining clear, appropriate boundaries throughout the therapeutic relationship to ensure the highest quality of patient care while safeguarding professional integrity.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the definition of practice guidelines for professional boundaries.
- Describe the tenets of a therapeutic professional relationship.
- Identify signs that boundaries between the clinician and the patient are crossed.
- Discuss strategies for maintaining clear and appropriate boundaries.
