Understanding and Maintaining Professional Boundaries - On Demand

This presentation will provide information about the unique patient/home infusion clinician relationship which can have inherent pitfalls with regards to maintaining professional boundaries. Patients who are receiving home infusion therapy are often on service for months to years, many times with the same primary clinicians.  This presentation will examine what a professional boundary is, how to discern if the boundary is being crossed, and how to resolve any boundary issues during the therapeutic relationship.

  1. Understand the definition of practice guidelines for professional boundaries.
  2. Describe the tenets of a therapeutic professional relationship.
  3. Identify signs that boundaries between the clinician and the patient are crossed.
  4. Discuss strategies for maintaining clear and appropriate boundaries.

Lou Anne Epperson, MSN, RN, IgCN, is the Director of Clinical Services - Nursing, for Ameria Specialty Infusion Services. Lou Anne is a member of INS and is an Advisory Board Member of IgNS.

Lou Anne received her Masters of Science in Nursing with Administrative focus, and has been involved with nursing education and home infusion for over 30 years. She has presented to local and national audiences regarding home care, home infusion of Ig, nursing competency and education.  She has also published articles in peer-reviewed journals related to home infusion therapy. nutrition and nursing competency.
